What are the three ways to install filter box and change the air filters?

There are three ways to change air filters depending on the air handler and filter boxes installed -

  1. Attic Filter Box or Horizontal Air Handler Filter Box - Filter Box is attached to the the return of horizontal air handler that is installed in the attic. Homeowner has to use attic access to reach the filter box connected to the air handler and replace the air filter.

  2. Mechanical Closet Filter Box or Vertical Air Handler Filter Box - Filter Box is attached to the vertical air handler that is installed in the mechanical closet or garage.

  3. Return Air Filter Grille w/ Frame- Return Grille comes with filter frame usually mounted in the ceiling or lower wall in hallways. Return grille is latched and hinged that can be opened to change the air filter.

Having mechanical closet and changing the air filter by opening the door is the most convenient method. This is easy on old folks or disabled person to change the air filter.
